This mushroom is often confused for actual lion’s mane. An understandable misconception as it is a weird name for a mushroom. But don't worry, you read the title. It was believed that mushrooms gave you longevity and spiritual wisdom which is true in a sense when looking at this mushroom specifically. Lion's mane has the ability to improve cognitive function, brain health, and mental health.

Lion's Mane is one of the most interesting legal mushrooms available. It is found in North America, East Asia, and Europe. The fungus has the ability to improve neuro performance while synchronously improving neuro health. Hericium Erinaceus (the scientific name for lion's mane) has been growing in popularity more due to its strong nootropic effects. Nootropics are considered "smart drugs" because they can essentially make you smarter.

The Science

Lion’s mane stimulates the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This protein can stimulate new brain cells and even strengthen existing ones. How this works is when your body creates BDNF, genes in your body are switched on that then grow new brain cells and neuropathways. High levels of BDNF are linked to making you age slower, improve your memory, and even learn faster.

Lion’s mane also stimulates the growth of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the brain. NGF is a protein that is responsible for promoting the growth, connection, and health of brain cells. Low NGF is linked to mood problems and age-related brain degenerative problems. So increasing the amount of this protein can be beneficial to one's brain's physical health and mental health.

NGF also regenerates the myelination of nerve cells. The axon of nerve cells are coated with a fatty substance called myelin. Myelin Sheath help the brain conduct signals quicker and more efficiently. If the myelin are damaged, these signals will slow down.

A study in Japan showed people 50-80 years old with mild cognitive impairment had better results on a cognitive test while taking Hericium Erinaceus. These individuals were given the test a few weeks after the study while not supplementing lion’s mane and their cognitive function declined back to baseline. This indicates that lion’s mane actively can improve brain function while supplementing.

Emerging studies are showing a correlation between mental illness and brain inflammation. Brain inflammation can come from physical stress or even environmental stressors on the body. While this is not the sole cause of depression or anxiety it is being determined as one of the causes rather.

Lion's mane has an anti-inflammatory effect on the brain by reducing the production of inflammatory proteins that may cause anxiety or depression. A study showed individuals who ingested lion's mane as a cookie reported a better wellbeing and alleviation of their stress after eating the cookies.

Because the mushroom has such strong cognitive functions it counteracts the dysfunction that comes along with Alzheimer's and dementia. With the rising numbers of those affected by the two diseases, the fungus is primarily being researched for its ability in aiding the symptom. And producing great results in counteractive measures.

Which is great news as the Alzheimer's association states that every 65 seconds an American develops Alzheimers.  And it is only predicted to rise even more.

Because of the nerve regeneration benefits that also aid neuro-diseases the benefits were also applied to rats with "crush injuries". When rats were supplemented with the fruiting body's of the fungus they were able to learn how to re-walk because of the peripheral nerve regeneration of lion's mane.

Why Lion's Mane?

While lion’s mane is getting recognized for its nootropic effects, it clearly has neuroprotection agent benefits, meaning it aids in the health of the neurons in your brain. As you are reading this your brain is being damaged.

Not because of the several typos that you have probably noticed but it is just how our brains are.

There is no way around it. Similar to while you are sitting still you are burning calories. So a neuroprotection agent in your morning ritual is important to combat the damage, increase your longevity of brain health, and improve focus.

Brain health or nootropic products can produce a weird experience. They are typically filled with heart palpitating levels of stimulants and chemicals you can't pronounce. With no guarantees of them being safe or well researched. Which is why you should consider supplementing Lion's mane.

And don't worry, it's vegan.
